Champagne, the Sparkling Wine of Celebration

sparkling wines champagne

Traditionally, Champagne has always been a way to celebrate milestones – to toast the bride and groom on their marriage, to ring in the New Year or to launch a ship. Considered almost a “soft drink,” champagne can be served with a meal or dessert. But for many years, this truly refreshing and exotic drink has been touted as a means of celebration and just enjoying the time ahead.

Champagne comes from vineyards in the champagne region of France which features the cities of Reims and Epernay.

If you buy a bottle of sparkling wine with champagne printed on the label, you can be assured that the bottle was produced in the vineyards of France. If you do not get Champagne which was produced in the  famous French regions, you’re pretty much just buying the standard sparkling wine. (Of course, there are many great sparkling wines.) Be sure that bottle is labeled “Champagne”,  spelled correctly with a capital C. French manufacturers are very protective of the brand name and are the only ones allowed to use it.

Champagne is made using three different types of grapes – Pinot Black, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Black and Meunier are types of black grapes , while Chardonnay is a well known type of white grape. The label on the bottle will indicate what type of champagne you buy,  the blend of different grape varieties, its dryness, etc, so you’ll know what flavor to expect.

Like most sparkling wine, Champagne is very common drunk at celebrations and other important events. While there are many good  types of sparkling wine, the name “Champagne” seems to make it  better.

Many people enjoy Champagne because of the way the bubbles  “spit out” once a bottle is uncorked. The bubbles that spew from this wine is the result of tiny drops of liquid who are disturbed by the carbonic acid gas. Once the liquid is disturbed, the bubbles form and pressurize the bottle. It is a natural reaction process due to  the double fermentation, which can be found with a bottle of champagne.

The next time you have a party and need something to celebrate and want things to be a little more interesting, grab a bottle of champagne. Few things compliment a celebration like a fine bottle of bubbly. You can find quality Champagne in the in most fine wine stores and online as well. Even though it may cost you a little money – when you jump up you’ll be glad you bought it.
